See, Jim Calhoun knew exacly what he was doing when he took his medical leave of absence earlier this week. It was all done to motivate his struggling team that had lost three games in a row. Calhoun stepped away from Wednesday's game against St. John's, and what did the Huskies do?Why, they snapped a three-game losing streak with a 75-59 win over the Red Storm. Calhoun was smart enough to make sure that he took his leave at the right time, as St. John's is one of the weaker teams in the Big East.
What Calhoun should do now is turn the reigns over on a full-time basis to assistant George Blaney, no spring chickem himself. Blaney stepped in to coach the Huskies on Wednesday.
Seriously, UConn said Calhoun's medical condition - whatever it might be - is not career-threatening. However, the school has given no indication when Calhoun will return, and Blaney will continue to coach the squad in his absence.
UConn has been secretive about this, which I suppose is understandable. Still, the man is 67 years and has had cancer issues in the past. It's easy to understand why UConn fans, who adore Calhoun, would be worried, not to mention his family.
Still, the school said that Calhoun didn't have a recurring cancer issue. Huskies athletic director Jeff Hathaway indicated that Calhoun wouldn't return until given clearance by his personal physician, Dr. Peter Schulman of the University of the Connecticut Health Center.
But, again, you wonder how much longer Calhoun can coach because he pushes himself so hard. Twenty-two times in his Hall of Fame coaching career he has either missed a game or left one early because of health concerns.
How many false alarms can the man have? ![]() |
